That’s the great thing about dealing locally, you get to communicate directly with the person buying or selling, they usually live near by, and you arrange to meet them to complete the deal honorably.

With the advent of classifieds ads online, buyers and sellers can now be contacted from international con artists with enticing emails to con them of their hard earned money.

These con artists can be extremely bright and think of new ways to trick you each day. They usually take advantage of people’s gullibility or manipulate online payment agencies and banking policies in subtle ways to rob you.

With these bright con artists out there I cannot over emphasize the importance of dealing locally or exercising extreme caution when dealing internationally. There are countless webpages now expounding the unfortunate experiences of duped people. Use these pages to avoid being the next victim.

Here are a few common methods and warning signs of online fraud:

1] Firstly, if any of your deals involve a person living in Eastern Europe or Africa forget about it. These countries house the vast majority of online con artists due to their lax laws or inability to enforce them.

2] You are offered a cashiers check or money order that exceeds the price of the item for sale, the buyer asks you to return the balance exceeding the price of the goods. Sounds good doesn’t it? You are receiving money, how can you lose out here? Your bank will often cash this check and then you normally ship the item and extra cash back to the buyer. Unfortunately that’s just the beginning of your troubles. The bank later investigates the check and discovers it’s a fraud and gets it’s money back from you ! This is after you shipped your goods and returned the overpayment amount. A double whammy !

3] Buyer gets you to ship an item after you think Western Union is sending you money. The buyer cons you by sending a fake email that looks like it’s from Western Union saying you will have funds released to you after sending the shipping/tracking number from Fed Ex, in other words, you’ve shipped the product already. Once you send them the tracking number you’re out of luck, they will receive the item and you later find out Western Union doesn’t have any money for you.

Unfortunately the banks and Western Union are not protecting you as much as you would have hoped or assumed in these cases. Some have suggested they have little incentive as they are making money from these transactions and you are stuck with the bills. Western Union is probably the most commonly used agency for these frauds.

So it’s really up to you to investigate when buying and selling internationally, no one else is going to help you if conned. Sending emails to third world countries law enforcement agencies to investigate the perpetrator is a fruitless endeavor. Even if it occurs within your own country of origin you will still likely not recoup any money.

I’ve painted a bleak picture but this is just of the bad apples out there, there are a majority of decent law abiding people out there making transactions. The rates of fraud are difficult to determine as most people cannot do anything about it after is happens and do not report it. The businesses involved also do not advertise these facts, or simply hide them or provide statements which are obviously overly optimistic to save face (eBay is guilty of this) I’ve heard an estimate of 1 in 100 transactions are actual frauds, eBay has quoted 1 in 40000 !

If a deal sounds too good to be true, trust your instincts and get out while the going is good or research anything suspicious before committing to any transaction. Ultimately you’re on your own when buying and selling internationally.

Paul Fezziwig writes for and administers 'Canadian Classifieds', http://www.cdncc.com , a website devoted to free local classifieds of all buy and sell ads.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Paul_Fezziwig

Auctions Vs. Classifieds by Valeriy Djachenko

In 2004, I decided to sell the shining pride of my coin collection – a 1909S VDB cent graded by PCGS as VF35. Any coin collector knows that my coin wasn't worth a fortune, but was popular enough to draw attention and sell itself quickly. So I posted it on eBay, using the most plain auction type they offered. It sold for about $750 and I was charged over $70 for the entire process.

Of course I knew about the charges. There were charges for posting an auction, others for using images, then a percentage of the final price, and finally a charge for accepting the payment through PayPal (an eBay company). It just didn't appear to me that I'd effectively lose about 9% of my coin's net worth. Why should eBay care how much I sell a coin for?

Fortunately there are other ways, but with the pros come the cons. One way is to simply use another auction site. There are many of them, but they usually charge the same as eBay and have fewer bidders. Another way is to use online classifieds.

Online classifieds are the equivalent of newspaper classifieds, but available free of charge to the buyers and usually without registration. Unfortunately, classifieds have developed a bad reputation over time as they were swamped with “get rich quick” and “business opportunity” advertisers. But, there are the exceptions:

1. http://www.projectagora.com/ is an advertisement website that has selling, buying and job ads. It's free to post an ad, even with an image. There is a small fee for featured advertising. Interested readers can respond to an advertisement by email and work out the details. Project Agora makes its money only from featured advertisements.

2. http://www.classifiedads.com/ is another such site. It also has free advertising with images. A nice feature is the localized ads per city. While it has many categories, the most popular seems to be the automotive section.

3. http://www.tradenpost.com/ is yet another free option, focused just on selling advertisements.

This list is by no means exhaustive.

Obviously, none of the classified websites have the same amount of buyers as eBay. However, the smaller charges (or their lack of) can compensate for the extra time it may take to find someone willing to do business with you.

Val Djachenko is the owner and director of http://www.projectagora.com/ Post your classified ad today.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Valeriy_Djachenko

<link rel='related' href='http://www.projectagora.com/' title='Auctions Vs. Awareness in buying in website prevents you to be deceived easily. These are some guides that will help you to buy a good product in an online classified ad.

Check the website

Take to consider the website’s reputation in finding a good online classified. Check the website if many people use this website as a way to buy and sell their products. Good basis would be: they can publish new advertisements everyday, they are information rich website, they can publish images of the product, the website has a high page rank, has a forum, etc.

Item seller

Look for some testimonial that a person has a good reputation. It can also help you to have a background of the person that will sell the product. Try to gather some information about the item seller to see whether if he or she is a scammer or not.

Look for the quality of the items

Gather information for the product that you want to buy. Learn to ask from others’ opinion and weigh it, so you will not regret later on. Gather information about the product by asking the item seller if it has a scratch, damage and defect.

Check the item price

Don't forget to make a canvass if the price is too high or not. Check other websites to determine if the product is worth your money. Please be aware of hidden charges. Make sure you do not overpay.

How old the product is

It is better to know what is new and what is old. Make sure that the product is durable. Also you must be able to distinguish if the package has been repacked or repaired. Maybe if it is too old, it will easily get broken.

Ask for a warranty

A personal warranty is a good thing to have. But it all depends on the seller if he or she gives a warranty. Try to settle a return agreement or a new item replacement if you have any problem with the product. If possible, ask for a money back guarantee.

Transaction

Make things clear between both of you, especially when regarding transactions. If it is to be delivered, don’t approve to deliver it in your house without you receiving it. Make sure you have the time to accept the package yourself. This allows you check the quality of the product. Check the quality by carefully looking at all the aspects of the product like parts, damages etc. Make sure that you buy an authentic item and not a fake one. If you don’t like their service, let them know what the problem is. These will help them enhance their service.

If you both agreed to meet at a certain place, the item seller usually is the one who goes to the buyer’s place. If both of you will meet at a certain place, be sure that you will able to test the product before you buy it, by this you will able to know if it is defective or not. It is a great idea if you are accompanied by a knowledgeable person.

Raymond M. Sure, and they said television was a passing fad, too! As we all know, just the opposite has occurred. There's a television in every household, and more than likely, the homeowner bought their television online-along with his books, music CDs, clothes, and maybe even his home.

Internet shopping is bigger than ever. You can find anything and everything for sale online. Many times, you can find it cheaper online than anywhere else. Internet shopping offers so much more than a discounted price tag, though.

Imagine a shopping mall where there are no lines, where there are no jammed parking garages, and no pushy sales clerks. This is no land of make believe. It is the Internet, where you can discover unprecedented selection, convenience, and opportunities. Online shopping gives you the luxury of browsing hundreds of stores from your living room, while saving on time and frustration. It provides you the chance to compare prices to your heart's delight on a near limitless selection of brands and models.

For even more benefits, try your hand at classifieds and auction Web sites. These sites are like yard sales and flea markets rolled into one. Unlike retail shopping sites, they offer:

Access to super secondary markets. Take your pick of secondhand or brand-new wholesale goods at steeply discounted prices. The vendors at classifieds sites can get away with it because they aren't paying high rent for a storefront or a warehouse. And in many cases, you're not paying taxes.

Tools to locate unique and rare collectibles. Imagine a classifieds site to be like a sunken pirate boat, laden with cultural artifacts, hard-to-find heirlooms, and priceless antiques. The Internet is your deep-sea vessel, sonar, and oxygen tank all in one.

Reach beyond your neighborhood. Search through the inventory of a vendor from your home town, or if you don't find what you're looking for there, try that fellow in California, Texas or Canada for that matter.

Close relationships with vendors. You deal with real people-not big, impersonal corporations-when you buy on classifieds sites. They can provide more details about the product, which you can then use to bargain for a reasonable price.

Despite this bounty of benefits, you might still be hesitant to dive into Internet shopping. Don't be embarrassed. You have good reason to take your time and weigh your choices. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Internet fraud tops the list of the thousands of fraud cases that happen every year. In some ways, WWW could stand for the Wild West Web, in that anything goes. Vendors can be villains in disguise, and there aren't any online Wyatt Earps to protect you from these bad guys. You're on your own.

But give yourself some credit. You have the common sense it takes to survive the WWW. It is the same commonsense that helps you make the most of your money on your standard shopping trips. Become familiar and comfortable with an online vendor before jumping into a purchase. Ask questions and do a bit of research.

After doing your research, you'll feel more confident in searching for your online booty. To refine your findings and whittle your list to only the exceptional sites, look for these additional qualities:

• A focus on local shopping, so you can feel more confident buying from neighbors.
• Free education and advice on safe purchasing.
• No-cost and easy browsing through available merchandise.
• Search tools that let you prioritize items by category, location, and distance.
• A straightforward pricing system that avoids the haggling and risk of auction bidding.
• Quick price comparisons among different vendors.

Unbelievably, a few trustworthy, practical, and exciting Web sites exist that have all of these features. To find these websites, simply browse through Yahoo's directory under the classifieds category. The best of the online classified sites offer these services free to buyers such as you. Some of these sites can link you at no charge to your neighbor selling the antique lamp that you've been hunting for or that retiree looking to unload an incredible piece of real estate-or the cowboy looking to sell his big-screen television.

About the Author: Donald Lee is the public relationship manager for Buysellcommunity.com.
